Withdraw Blood From Obese Patients (2005)

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Everyday at 9 am , blood sample of the patient should be taken for further investigation n follow up treatment in the hospital. Before this I just be an observer only thinking it might be a nurse’s job not a doctor’s. huhuhuh berlagak giler aku.

One morning a senior nurse asked us to do it by ourselves. She called a name n I have to find that patient. U know who? An Obese Egyptian lady in her thirties with diabetes n hypertension……..this is very common in Egypt .

You can see obese people everywhere. Nak mengurat perempuan arab tgk mak die dulu. Kalau mak die besar tong, lupakanlah anaknya. It will be inherited as soon as u have just married. Believe it!

The problem is I couldn’t find even a single vein in her cutaneous skin even though she has a white pallor skin. No vein in the forearm could be detected. Then I searched on her dorsal of hand. Nothing! Just a little sign of dark blue stream. Better than never, I tried to take the blood sample.

Waduh-waduh! Misplaced! The lady began to yell (common in Egypt even though the syringe didn’t enter her skin yet). I tried my best n consoled her. She is yelling like her son is dying! So I stop n took out the syringe. And the blood was pouring out of the hole! I took it but it was still insufficient. So that nurse came and took it by herself.

That obese lady was very angry with me. In the same days, my Egyptian friends also did the same mistakes like mine. We thought the patients would not allow any medical student to take the blood sample again from them. And we thought we would not come to this ward again until all the faces in this ward disappear, then we will take blood sample again and of course, more careful!

Moral value: avoid fat! It helps ur doctor!
